7×64

7×64 Brenneke · 7 x 64 Br.

Wilhelm Brenneke's 1917 cartridge, the 8×64 S case necked down to 7 mm. One of Central Europe's favourite all-round hunting cartridges.

The 7×64 was made by necking the 8×64 S case down to 7 mm; the designer was Wilhelm Brenneke, in 1917.

It holds a larger powder charge than the 7×57 Mauser and gives roughly 10–12 percent higher muzzle velocity. Recoil is moderate.

Hunting use

Used on red deer, fallow deer, wild boar, mouflon and roe deer, hence its reputation as an all-round cartridge. Typical bullet weights are 130–180 grain (8.4–11.7 g); heavier bullets suit larger game.
