.222 Remington

.222 Rem · 5,7×43 mm

A small-bore, low-recoil centerfire cartridge introduced by Remington in 1950. Known for accuracy, it is now used mainly for predators.

The .222 Remington was designed by Mike Walker and introduced in 1950 for the Remington 722 rifle. The case is a new design rather than a modification of an existing one. Typical 50–55 grain bullets leave the muzzle at roughly 3,100–3,300 ft/s with negligible recoil.

It has been overtaken by the .223 Remington but remains common in Central Europe among older hunting rifles.

Jagdliche Verwendung

Suitable for fox and golden jackal at moderate range. Bullet energy is generally too low for roe deer, so it is not recommended there. Typical bullet weights are 50–60 grain (3.2–3.9 g).
