The classic German Mauser 98 military cartridge, still common in hunting across Central Europe. The S version with a 8.22 mm bullet is today's standard.
The 8×57 IS came out of the German rifle testing commission early in the 20th century. The S (Spitzgeschoss) designation indicates the 8.22 mm bullet diameter; the older I cartridge used a 8.08 mm bullet. The CIP maximum pressure for the IS is 3,900 bar.
It is very common in old Mauser 98 hunting rifles, with heavy bullets giving good penetration at moderate velocity.
Lovačka upotreba
Has been and is used on red deer, fallow deer, wild boar, mouflon and roe deer. Typical bullet weights are 123–196 grain (8.0–12.7 g). In old rifles use only ammunition approved by the maker.
