.223 Remington

.223 Rem · 5,7×44,7 mm

A development of the .222 Remington with a larger powder charge, available since 1964. One of the most widespread small-bore cartridges, used on predators.

The .223 Remington grew out of the .222 Remington and was introduced commercially in 1964. It is related to the 5.56×45 mm NATO cartridge, but the two differ in chamber and pressure measurement, so they should not be interchanged casually.

Bullets of 3.5–4.5 g (55–70 grain) leave the muzzle at about 900–1,000 m/s, with a flat trajectory and mild recoil.

Hunting use

Used on fox and golden jackal at moderate range. Bullet energy is not sufficient for larger hoofed game. Typical bullet weights are 50–70 grain (3.2–4.5 g).
